I hope you enjoy this joke:
A Texan was standing admiring the beauty of Niagara Falls when a New Yorker standing next to him said sarcastically: "I bet you don't have anything like this in Texas."
"No," said the Texan, "but we've got plumbers who could fix it!"

This year, Toronto is hosting the G20 Summit. This means that there will be a lot of important people coming to and staying in Toronto. This means A LOT of security. The section of Toronto around the convention center will be closed, so we will not be able to pick up at 33 Yonge St. from June 7 - 20. For more information on our Toronto pick up points, please go to www.chariots-of-fire.com/ourtours/torontotoniagara.html

On the Plus side, Niagara Falls will be a great place to do some VIP spotting. There will be a lot of cavalcades around Niagara Falls as these dignitaries do their sight seeing. (Who could resist going to the Falls while in Toronto?)

Hello, and welcome back. I took a break for the holidays and have been having a hard time getting back into the swing of things. This week, I will do a quick recap of what has happened in the past month.

The weather in Niagara Falls has been pretty mild for December and January, but still, there have been very few people visiting the Falls. I guess that it’s this economy.

The Rink at the Brink hasn’t been doing as well as hoped for. There have been different incentives to use it. The Stanly Cup even made a brief appearance at the Rink . It was one of the few times, other than the Playoffs, that the Cup has been outside of the Hockey Hall of Fame. You have untill Feb. 28 to check out the Rink at the Brink.

The Olympic Torch came through Niagara Falls on December 20. I was already away, so I missed it.

The Winter Festival of Lights ended for this year on January 4th.

I found a very cool video of the Falls Illumination.

Over Niagara Falls in a ..."Thing"?

First things first, I should probably tell you that there is now a fine for tring to go Over Niagara Falls intentionally.

In 1961, a new regulations stated that you can get fined for " a failure to attain a ceremonial permit from the Niagara Parks Commission, to perform an act which congregates or is likely to congregate persons, contrary to the regulations of the Niagara Parks act."

Niagara Falls attracts many people, most for the sightseeing, but to some, Niagara Falls is there to be conquered.

These people intentionally went over Niagara Falls.
The first person credited for going over Niagara Falls in a barrel was a 63 year old schoolteacher, named Annie Taylor, on October 24, 1901. She survived. Annie is quoted as saying " No one ought ever do that again."

The second was Bobby Leach, in a steel barrel. He's survived but spent six months in hospital
after his stunt.

Charles Stephens tried to go over in a barrel on July 11, 1920. He didn't survive.

Jean Lussier went over Niagara Falls in a rubber ball filled with rubber tubes on July 4, 1928. He survived.

George Stathakis tried the stunt in a barrel on July 4, 1930. He died.

William "Red" Hill Jr. Went over the falls in, what he called," A Thing" . It was 13 inner tubes held together by fishnet. Of course, this didn't work, and he died.

William Fitzgerald went over the falls in a 3 m(10ft) rubber ball on July 15, 1961. He survived, but was the first to be fined.

Karel Soucek was the first Canadian to go over the Falls on July 3, 1984. His contraption was a steel barrel, insulated with liquid foam. He survived and was fined.

Steven Trotter went over Niagara Falls in 2 plastic pickle barrels, surrounded by innertubes, on Aug.18, 1985. He survived and was fined.

John "David" Munday survived going over Niagara Falls on Oct.5, 1985, in a steel barrel. He tried it again on July 15, 1990, but got stuck at the brink of the falls and had to be rescued. (Of coarse he was fined both times.)

Peter DeBernardi and Geoffrey Petkovich were the first to go over Niagara Falls as a team, in the same barrel on Sept. 27, 1989. They survived and were fined.

Jessie W. Sharp went over in a Kayak, as a stunt on June 5, 1990, and died.

John "David" Munday on Sept 26, 1993 recreated his stunt in a steel barrel, complete with getting a fine.

Steven Trotter tempted fate again, this time with Lori Martin. They used hot water tanks that were welded together, on June 18, 1995. They survived and were fined.

Robert Overacker went over Niagara Falls on a jet ski as a stunt on Oct. 1, 1995. He died.

Kirk Jones tried to commit suicide on Oct.21, 2003. He lived, and to add to his troubles, he was jailed and fined. He was the second person to go over Niagara Falls without any protection and live. The first is in the story below. On July 9, 1960, Jim Honeycott, from Michigan, took two of his coworkers children for a ride in his small boat on the upper portion of the Niagara River. The boat flipped, and all three of them were washed downstream. 17 year old Deanne Woodward and 10 year old Roger Woodward were wearing life vests, but Jim was not. The current pulled Deanne close to the river bank. John R Hays and John Quattrochi, both from New Jersey, jumped over the guardrail to rescue Deanne. Both Roger and Jim were swept over Niagara Falls. When Roger surfaced, passengers on the Maid of the Mist spotted him. He was trown a life raft and pulled aboard, unhurt. Roger was the first person to go over Niagara Falls without any protection and survive. Jim was not so lucky, his body was found four days later.

For some people, "Over the Falls" has a slightly different meaning.

Jean Francois Grauelet, "The Great Blondin", is famous for walking over Niagara Falls on a tightrope. He even crossed once while carrying his managar on his back, and another time, with his wife on his back. (She must have been a very trusting woman.) My favorite of his stunts was to pull a grill out onto the center of the tightrope, cook breakfast, and lower it down to the passengers on the Maid of the Mist.

The first woman to tightrope over the Falls was Maria Spelterina in 1876.
