Even though today was a wet, sloppy day, today was the opening day for the Rink by the Brink. What is the Rink by the Brink? It is an outdoor ice rink, built right by the Brink of Niagara Falls. The Rink was scheduled to open a couple of days ago, but because of the unusually warm weather, the opening was postponed. Where the Niagara River makes a 90° turn, a Whirlpool has formed. The Whirlpool has a depth of 38 m or 120 ft. Like all whirlpools, the water circulates in a counterclockwise direction. I'm often asked, "What's a floral clock?"
The answer is simple: a clock made out of flowers. The Floral Clock was built in 1950, by Ontario Hydro. The Floral Clock was built right across the street from the Sir Adam Beck Power stations, down river from Niagara Falls. The clock is 40 foot in diameter. The Niagara River is the greatest source of hydroelectric power. It is home to several hydro-power plants. Two of the more famous hydro-dams on the Canadian side are the Sir Adam Beck I and II. They were named, of course, after Sir Adam Beck, the first head of the Hydro-Electric Power Commission. They produce over 2 million kW of power. According to The Globe and Mail’s article on Thursday, October 29, the Government of Ontario is forcing the Niagara Parks commission to accept bids from companies that want to run boat tours at Niagara Falls. When the Maid of the Mist Steamboat Company’s 25 year contract is up, companies will have a chance to bid for permission to run boat tours at Niagara Falls. The Maid of the Mist is accused of having a monopoly on boat tours at Niagara Falls.

Many people confuse the village of Niagara-on-the-Lake with the city of Niagara Falls. They are 2 different towns. As you can guess, the city of Niagara Falls is in Niagara Falls. The village of Niagara-on-the-Lake is built downriver from Niagara Falls, where Lake Ontario meets the Niagara River.

Many people confuse the Skylon Tower with it’s larger cousin, the CN Tower. They are NOT the same.
The CN Tower, located in downtown Toronto, was the world’s tallest building. The Skylon Tower, located in Niagara Falls, isn’t as tall, but has a spectacular view of Niagara Falls and the Niagara area.

On Saturday, I told you about the Maid of the Mist. If you would like to have a chance to go on this historic boat ride, you would have to hurry. The Maid of the Mist id closing for the Winter on Oct. 25. It will reopen again sometime at the end of April, or the beginning of May. You can check back on this blog in the Spring to find out exactly when.
