Niagara Falls Joke

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Wednesday, June 23, 2010, In : General Niagara Falls
I hope you enjoy this joke:
A Texan was standing admiring the beauty of Niagara Falls when a New Yorker standing next to him said sarcastically: "I bet you don't have anything like this in Texas."
"No," said the Texan, "but we've got plumbers who could fix it!"

I'm back!!

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Saturday, January 16, 2010, In : General Niagara Falls

Hello, and welcome back. I took a break for the holidays and have been having a hard time getting back into the swing of things. This week, I will do a quick recap of what has happened in the past month.

The weather in Niagara Falls has been pretty mild for December and January, but still, there have been very few people visiting the Falls. I guess that it’s this economy.

The Rink at the Brink hasn’t been doing as well as hoped for. There have been different incentives to use it. The...

Hey, Who turned off the water?

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, In : General Niagara Falls
On the morning of March 29, 1848 an eerie silence hung overhead.  The normal constant rumble of Niagara Falls was missing.  Many locals rushed to the brink of Niagara Falls to discover that there was no water.  Many people though that it was a sign from God.  The curches were full.
What happened to the water?  Well, an ice jam at at the mouth of the river, from Lake Erie had made a dam overnight.  When the temperatures rose, the ice started melting and let the water flow again....

Over Niagara Falls in a ..."Thing"?

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Saturday, December 5, 2009, In : General Niagara Falls

First things first, I should probably tell you that there is now a fine for tring to go Over Niagara Falls intentionally.

In 1961, a new regulations stated that you can get fined for " a failure to attain a ceremonial permit from the Niagara Parks Commission, to perform an act which congregates or is likely to congregate persons, contrary to the regulations of the Niagara Parks act."

Niagara Falls attracts many people, most for the sightseeing, but to some, Niagara Falls is there to be con...

The Rink by the Brink

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Wednesday, November 25, 2009, In : General Niagara Falls
Even though today was a wet, sloppy day, today was the opening day for the Rink by the Brink.
What is the Rink by the Brink?  It is an outdoor ice rink, built right by the Brink of Niagara Falls.
The Rink was scheduled to open a couple of days ago, but because of the unusually warm weather, the opening was postponed.
The Rink is a new attraction for this years' Winter Festival of Lights, which is known mostly for the evening light displays around Niagara Falls.  There are other attraction as...

This whirlpool doesn't suck.

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Saturday, November 21, 2009, In : General Niagara Falls

The Niagara River is about 35 mi (56 kilometres) long, including Niagara Falls.

Where the Niagara River makes a 90° turn, a Whirlpool has formed. The Whirlpool has a depth of 38 m or 120 ft. Like all whirlpools, the water circulates in a counterclockwise direction. There is an interesting phenomenon, that happens from about November 1 to April 1, after the water from the Niagara River is diverted before the Falls for the hydro electric power plants. The Whirlpool starts to move in a clockwi...

Questions that you will not find on our FAQ's

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Thursday, November 19, 2009, In : General Niagara Falls

During the 10 years that I have answered the phone for Chariots of Fire, I have answered many questions.

Someone once said that there is no such thing as a dumb question. People that do not live in, or are not very familiar with the Toronto and Niagara areas are not sure what to expect when coming to visit Niagara Falls.

The following 5 questions are not as uncommon as you might think:

Question: Can you see Niagara Falls from Toronto?

Answer: Not really. Even though Niagara Falls is ...

The Floral Clock

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Saturday, November 14, 2009, In : General Niagara Falls

I'm often asked, "What's a floral clock?"

The answer is simple: a clock made out of flowers. The Floral Clock was built in 1950, by Ontario Hydro. The Floral Clock was built right across the street from the Sir Adam Beck Power stations, down river from Niagara Falls. The clock is 40 foot in diameter. The face of the clock is made of over 15,000 plants, and is changed twice a year, by the students at the Niagara Horticultural School. They never repeat a design. Since Sir Adam Beck was the h...

The Sir Adam Beck Hydro Dam

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, In : General Niagara Falls

The Niagara River is the greatest source of hydroelectric power. It is home to several hydro-power plants. Two of the more famous hydro-dams on the Canadian side are the Sir Adam Beck I and II. They were named, of course, after Sir Adam Beck, the first head of the Hydro-Electric Power Commission. They produce over 2 million kW of power. Because of the plants, during the East Coast Blackout in the summer of 2003, Niagara Falls and area still had power.

There are 14m (45 ft) diameter tunnels ...

The Winter Festval of lights starts tonight!

I know that on our Niagara Falls tour ride, you will not have time to see this, but....
Tonight is the opening cerimonies for the Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls.  What is the Festival of Lights?  Don't they do that everynight?
The Winter Festival of Lights at Niagara Falls is more than illuminating Niagara Falls.  After the sun goes down, they turn on hundreds of light sculptures all around Niagara Falls and the Dufferin Islands.  There is a big display featuring Disney Characters n...

The end of a Niagara Falls Icon?

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Saturday, October 31, 2009, In : General Niagara Falls

According to The Globe and Mail’s article on Thursday, October 29, the Government of Ontario is forcing the Niagara Parks commission to accept bids from companies that want to run boat tours at Niagara Falls. When the Maid of the Mist Steamboat Company’s 25 year contract is up, companies will have a chance to bid for permission to run boat tours at Niagara Falls. The Maid of the Mist is accused of having a monopoly on boat tours at Niagara Falls.

On one hand, I think that having anothe...

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada's Prettiest Town

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Sunday, October 25, 2009, In : General Niagara Falls

Many people confuse the village of Niagara-on-the-Lake with the city of Niagara Falls. They are 2 different towns. As you can guess, the city of Niagara Falls is in Niagara Falls. The village of Niagara-on-the-Lake is built downriver from Niagara Falls, where Lake Ontario meets the Niagara River.

The village was first settled in 1776. Niagara-on-the-Lake was the first capital of Upper Canada. It was the first place to make slavery illegal in North America. During the war of 1812, many batt...

Well, autumn is here in full force. What better place to view the fall foliage than at Niagara Falls? The brilliant color on the trees adds to the beauty and romance of Niagara Falls.

The picture on this blog entry was taken earlier this week by one of our guide/ drivers, down river from the Sir Adam Beck Hydro- electric dam.

The Skylon Towers over Niagara Falls

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Saturday, October 17, 2009, In : General Niagara Falls

Many people confuse the Skylon Tower with it’s larger cousin, the CN Tower. They are NOT the same.

The CN Tower, located in downtown Toronto, was the world’s tallest building. The Skylon Tower, located in Niagara Falls, isn’t as tall, but has a spectacular view of Niagara Falls and the Niagara area.

The Skylon Tower opened on Oct 6, 1965. The tower is 775 ft. tall, but it only takes a 52 second elevator ride to get to the observation level. There are both indoor and outdoor observatio...

The Thrilling Maid of the Mist

Posted by Jane Seniuk on Saturday, October 10, 2009, In : General Niagara Falls

“Indian legend tells of Lelawala, a beautiful maid betrothed by her father to a brave she despised. Rather than marry, Lelawala chose to sacrifice herself to her true love, He-No, the Thunder God, who dwelled in a cave behind the Horseshoe Falls. She paddled the canoe into the swift current of the Niagara River and was swept over the brink. He-No caught her as she plummeted and together their spirits are said to live forever in the Thunder God's sanctuary behind the Falls."- The Magic of Ni...
