During the 10 years that I have answered the phone for Chariots of Fire, I have answered many questions.

Someone once said that there is no such thing as a dumb question. People that do not live in, or are not very familiar with the Toronto and Niagara areas are not sure what to expect when coming to visit Niagara Falls.

The following 5 questions are not as uncommon as you might think:

Question: Can you see Niagara Falls from Toronto?

Answer: Not really. Even though Niagara Falls is “across the Lake” from Toronto, they are still 50 km, or 30 miles, directly across. Driving distance is 150 km, or 90 miles. Why I say not really is because, there is 1 or 2 days a year, in the spring or fall, when the air quality is good enough that from the top of the CN Tower, you can look across Lake Ontario and see Niagara Falls. (Or from Niagara Falls, see the CN Tower.)

Question: Do you have snow in September.

Answer: No. The earliest that I have seen it snow has been flurries on October 31. The earliest that we would get any snow accumulation would be the end of November.

Question: Why doesn’t the Maid of the Mist run in the winter?

Answer: The Maid of the Mist closes at the end of October because generally, it is uncomfortably cold for most people to get wet when it is 5 to 10 Celsius, or 40 to 50 farenheight. Also, in the heart of winter, there are ice chunks in the river. We all know what happened to the Titanic when it ran into an ice chunk.

Question: Can I go over Niagara Falls in a barrel?

Answer: Why would you want to?  That aside, there is a $10,000 fine for doing any stunt over (going over the Falls in a barrel, jst ski, or any contraption, or tight rope walking over the Falls.) Niagara Falls.

Question: What time/ when do the Falls close?

Answer: Well, they don’t exactly turn off the water. In November, they divert quite a bit of water for the power plants, but there is still A LOT of water flowing over Niagara Falls. You can view Niagara Falls any time of day or night, but the illumination of the Falls at night is turned off around midnight. Parking lots and public restrooms, though will be closed earlier.
